Libraries Supporting Families Through Reading at Easter Family Day
The Easter Family Day at HMP Exeter created a warm and inclusive environment where fathers in custody could spend meaningful, quality time with their children and family. A standout feature of the event was the presence of the library, offering a wide selection of free, brand-new books provided by Give A Book. From baby board books to titles for older readers, the range ensured every child could find something engaging and age-appropriate.
Library staff played a key role in supporting the day, engaging directly with children and families to help them explore reading together. Through gentle guidance, recommendations based on interests, and a welcoming attitude, the library team helped children choose books they were excited to read, turning book selection into a shared, joyful moment between parent and child.
Families were also invited to complete a short feedback questionnaire, encouraging reflection on book choices and further supporting literacy development.
This event showcased the important role libraries play in prison settings—not only by providing access to books, but by fostering connection, learning, and emotional well-being. By promoting shared reading and quality time, library involvement in Family Days helps strengthen family bonds, supports rehabilitation, and encourages a love of books that can extend well beyond the visit.
